S-BEND

Words of wisdom by Sander Lenten (http://www.sanderlenten.com): There is a lot of different ways to do a S-Bend. To know how to do it so many different ways, you have to understand what a S-Bend actually is. It consists of an Air railey and a horizontal 360 spin. You can do it by starting the Air Railey and thereafter the spin, but this will result in a more vertical 360 spin. Although this will make a progression to S-Bend to Blind a lot easier, I prefer to combine the Air Railey with the 360 spin and this is the one I will explain. It is highly recommended that you master the Air Railey before attempting this one. This trick requires a bit of coordination, so I advise to go through it a couple of times in your head while you’re waiting for wind or still on the beach. I’ll be explaining the trick traveling to right (as shown in the picture), if you prefer doing it to the left… then it’s just opposite, left is right and right is left. Lets get down and dirty now. From cruising you want to put your kite slightly higher (say between 1 and 2 O’clock), but don’t put it too high, as this will put you more vertical, rather than horizontal, also will take you out of balance quite a bit. Once you have your kite in the right position increase your speed slightly (I know it’s more commitment, but trust me the trick will go better) and start to look ahead for a sweet spot to take off. When you’re approaching your “sweet spot” let go of your edge a little bit by going slightly downwind and putting your board flat on the water. This also will give you a perfect moment to unhook. (This is just for a split second to make your edge even more effective and will give you the chance to unhook easier, as the lines will slack a little bit). On the sweet spot edge hard and you should get a pull from your kite. (Practice this a few times to get the timing right, if this is not the case yet). This force will pull you over your board and will put you in the Air Railey position. All you now have to do is, just before completely leaving the water bend your right knee, lean your right shoulder towards the water and into the turn. Simultaneously start looking over your left shoulder. (The bending off the knee is to stop the backwards rotation you got from edging, for the pop, the shoulder lean is the push to start the forward rotation and the looking is to give speed and direction to the rotation). Once the rotation is 3/4 complete, you’re eyes will be back on the water and you can start looking for a spot to land. Once found don’t take your view of this spot. (Keeping your eyes on the landing will slowly stop the looking over your shoulder and so the rotation). When you’ve spot your landing bring your legs back under your body, extend your legs and compress them on impact. Try to land with the bar at about waist height. (To get your legs under your body, you could push your bar towards the water and tighten your abs). When you are in control on the water again fix your boardshorts (if applicable) and hair. Then look up for your friends to see if they saw you styling it out. Learn it, stick it, enjoy it..! |
